Eating disorders continue to be on the increase in today’s society and it’s not just a problem for teenage girls.
Older women are under just as much pressure to be thin as teenagers are. We are seeing more and more women developing an eating disorder in their thirties, forties, fifties and beyond. The onset on anorexia, bulimia and compulsive eating can occur at any time in a person’s life.
Society also puts women of all ages under a lot of pressure to be thin. Newspaper articles and Magazines give us the impression that we must have a perfect marriage, be a perfect mother, have the perfect figure and have the perfect career. This causes women to suffer feelings of worthlessness, low self esteem and self hatred. They are under the illusion that in order to be happy they must be thin.
What then follows?
An eating disorder, often binge eating, becomes a woman’s way of escaping the daily pressures of life. We can no longer enjoy food or allow ourselves to provide our bodies with the nutrition it needs and deserves, because society and the media make us feel guilty for eating.
But you don’t have to live with these bad eating habits for ever.
