Children with Learning Difficulties

Learning Difficulties

Discovering that a child has learning difficulties can be a turning point in a family’s life.  It usually means entering a challenging and possibly unexpected world.  It can take some time for families to adjust to the situation both in practical and emotional terms.

Some children are born with learning disabilities, but others can develop them through illness or accidents.  Unfortunately it can take some time before a child is assessed and diagnosed with a learning disability.

To understand what support is available is one of the best ways to take back control of the situation.

Here are some of the learning difficulties which can affect children:

  • Dyslexia
  • Dyspraxia
  • Dysgraphia
  • Dyscalculia
  • ADD/ADHD
  • Autism
  • Asperger Syndrome
  • Behaviour and Memory Problems
  • Hearing problems
  • Audio/Visual processing
  • Proprioception Dysfunction

Parents can also experience their own difficulties when dealing with a child who has learning difficulties.  They can very often feel ‘at the end of their tether’, or suffer from a combination of anxiety, stress, frustration and anger.  We always work together with parents to help them overcome these pressures.

Secondary Issues

A child can often develop secondary emotional issues from their primary difficulties, these could be as follows:

  • Lack of confidence and self esteem
  • Feeling ‘left out’
  • Feeling ‘different’ from the rest
  • Being bullied
  • Becoming insular
  • Developing phobias
  • Behavioural problems
  • Feeling angry and frustrated
  • Lack of concentration
  • Oversensitive to noise
  • Lack of social skills

Sometimes children develop phobias as an excuse for not participating in various activities.

What is Natural Solutions Therapy?

Natural Solutions Therapy has been developed to help children with learning difficulties by getting to the root cause of the problem.  It is an educational system which combines physical, psychological, auditory and emotional well-being treatments and has evolved into a unique learning system.  Natural Solutions Therapy is a combination of already proved, tried and tested methods.  This eclectic approach improves the efficacy and speed at which we can help children overcome a variety of learning difficulties.  This then allows them to develop maximum learning potential.  Natural Solutions Therapy is a structured and monitored programme that is flexible and deals with the primary problem and any developing secondary issues.

How does the programme work?

Natural Solutions Therapy starts with a full diagnostic and assessment session.  During this session the child will be assessed and datum will be taken to establish their present ability and stage of development.  This will enable us to monitor the child’s progress through the duration of the treatment programme and because the programme is structured and flexible we can then deal with any secondary developing issues that arise.  This ensures that nothing will block the progress of the main structure of the programme.

Natural Solutions Therapy is a combination of the following treatments:

  • Hypnotherapy
  • Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)
  • Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
  • Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy (CBH)
  • The Listening Programme (TLP)
  • The Learning Breakthrough Programme (LBP)

The Listening Programme (TLP)

The Learning Break-through Programme (LBP)

Sometimes auditory perception is distorted through illness, injury, developmental or other challenges.  If this happens it can lead to academic, emotional, cognitive and social challenges.  The Listening Programme’s clinically-proven approach gently trains the auditory system to accurately process sound.

TLP helps with the following:

  • Attention and concentration
  • Listening
  • Speech and language
  • Memory
  • Communication
  • Social skills
  • Reading
  • Sensory integration
  • Self-regulation
  • Physical balance and coordination
  • Vocal performance and musical ability

Whether you are interested in improving brain health for longevity, expanding your own abilities or helping someone you care about, TLP can make a significant difference. Listening to psychoacoustically modified classical music actually impacts a wide range of abilities, such as reading, communication, learning and memory.  Numerous studies worldwide, including research at the University of Sheffield, provide empirical evidence that substantiate The Listening Program’s efficacy.  While that study confirms The Listening Program’s credibility, for some people the question remains.

How does The Listening Programme work?

TLP is designed to stimulate, or ‘exercise’ the different functions of the auditory processing system.   The psychoacoustically modified music and production techniques are designed to stimulate, or “exercise” the different functions of the auditory processing system. This enables the brain to receive, process, store and use the valuable information provided.

TLP is designed to address these zones and systematically provides auditory stimulation.  When customised for listeners by TLP Providers, its use helps improve their ability to function in a number of ways:

  • Sensory Integration — Targets the first zone (lower frequencies) to stimulate functions such as balance, coordination, motor skills and more.
  • Full Spectrum — provides a kind of overall “organising” experience.
  • Speech & Language — emphasises the mid to higher frequencies to stimulate the brain’s abilities for memory, attention, vocal control and more.
  • High Spectrum — focuses on the higher frequencies that impact creativity, intuition, energy and more.

The Listening Program’s ABC Modular Design™ takes the program a step further.  This enables listeners to effectively exercise the auditory processing system, providing “warm-up,” “workout” and “cool-down” phases.

The Learning Breakthrough Programme (LBP)

LBP seeks to address the underlying causes of sensory processing and integration problems.  These often include Dyslexia; Dyspraxia; ADHD, as well as general challenges with reading, writing, co-ordination, concentration and balance.  Research shows that many of these issues have underlying vestibular, cerebellar, visual perceptual and motor causes.

Developed over many years by Dr Frank Belgau, the LBP is a suite of movement ‘exercises’.  These exercises can be performed at home on the specialized equipment.  Using the exercises will improve the way the brain processes sensory information.  This improved efficiency allows participants to read, write, speak, hear, remember, and control physical movements and stay focused more effectively.

How do you use LBP?

The LBP is organized into daily activity segments which make it very easy to use.  Because of its simplicity any clinician, teacher or parent can use it without special training.  The LBP comes with a DVD that shows every movement and represents an accumulation of the most successful activities identified over the past 30 years.

The Belgau Balance Board is the most important piece in the LBP.  It has adjustable rockers and the difficulty level can be gradually increased.  This constantly provides the user with just enough balance challenge to train the system effectively.  The LBP also adds many fun visual, motor, and kinesthetic activities.  The used will improve efficient processing with as little as 15 minutes per day.

What is included in the Programme?

The Programme comes complete and ready to use with full instructions and a DVD to follow.  It also includes the games for each session.  Over 12 weeks the Programme can be individualized, which ensures the correct challenge to the nervous system, brain and balance mechanisms.

This in turns helps with:

  • Balance
  • Co-ordination
  • Writing
  • Reading
  • Hand to eye co-ordination
  • Spatial Awareness
  • Sports Skills
  • Information Processing
  • Speech and Language
  • Concentration
  • Listening Skills
  • Motor planning and fluid movement
