It has recently become widely accepted that children and adolescents are increasingly suffering from mental health issues. This subject is frequently discussed on Radio, TV and in newspapers. Recently we have noticed an increase in the number of children and adolescents visiting our Practice for help.
How can we help with children’s issues?
Over the last 13 years The Clem Turner Hypnotherapy Practice has developed a protocol called Natural Solutions Therapy (NST). This system has been specifically designed for therapists to work successfully with children and adolescents. NST eclectic approach improves the speed at which we are able to help children overcome their issues and difficulties.
What is Natural Solutions Therapy?
There are a range of treatments within the NST programme. These treatments stimulate the imagination of children in order to assist them in their problems. A child naturally has a vivid imagination and the doorway between the conscious and the subconscious mind is imagination.
Natural Solutions Therapy is a combination of the following treatments:
- Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)
- Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)
- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
- Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy (CBH)
When children experience stress or are worried, they can exhibit different signals.
Some of the signs for parents to be mindful of can be:
Schoolwork beginning to deteriorate
being accident prone or clumsy
Headaches or tummy aches
Biting their nails
Pulling out their hair or eyebrows
Wetting or soiling the bed
Being more angry than normal
Turning to drugs or alcohol in an attempt to improve how they feel
How the National Solutions Therapy Programme Works:
Initially a parent or guardian is seen at our premises without their child. This meeting helps us to get vital background information on the child and their issues without talking in front of the child. Also at this meeting we explain how NST works and the methods we use to help our clients.
The parent or guardian then brings the child/adolescent for a consultation and we talk about the problem providing the child/adolescent is comfortable with that. However, our focus will be on talking directly to the child/adolescent rather than talking about them as can happen in some situations.
During this session the child will be assessed and datum will be taken to establish their present ability and stage of development. This will enable us to monitor the child’s progress through the duration of the NTS programme and because the programme is structured and flexible, we can then deal with any secondary developing issues that arise, ensuring that nothing will block the progress of the main structure of the programme.
What issues can we help with using Natural Solutions Therapy?
Anger Management, Anxiety, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Bullying, Bed wetting (Enuresis), Bed Soiling (Encopresis), Confidence, Confidence at school, Eating Disorders, Fear of the dark, Fear of Thunderstorms, Fear of exams, Hair pulling, Insomnia, Nightmares, Phobias, Tics, Teeth Grinding, Thumb Sucking, Stuttering etc.
The above mentioned problems seem to be on the increase because children are spending more time watching television and playing computer games rather than playing physical games, sports, climbing trees etc. They are living in a 2D world rather than a 3D world. Therefore children are losing their spatial awareness which can result in a lack of co-ordination skills. Also it can cause a reduced ability to process auditory and visual information correctly.
What situations can cause children’s issues?
Many parents today have such busy lives that they find difficulty spending sufficient time with their children. Families sometimes do not have meals together because of time pressures. Parents are often happy to let children occupy their time playing computer games and watching television. Children send text messages to their friends rather than speaking with them either personally or by phone. Unfortunately, this is resulting in poor language and communication skills.
Parents can have problems too
Parents can also experience their own difficulties when dealing with a child who has problems or issues. They can very often feel ‘at the end of their tether’, or suffer from a combination of anxiety, stress, frustration and anger. When treating children with our methods we always involve parents or guardians. We teach the parents coping skills which will help to release any pressures they feel.
